Most historians believe that cricket developed in the southeastern region of England during the medieval period. Located in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, the world’s highest cricket ground is the Chail Cricket Ground, which is situated at an altitude of 8,018 feet above sea level.

Cricket is a game played between two teams of 11 players, in which each team tries to score as many runs as possible by hitting the ball (a task called bowling in cricket) with a special, wooden bat. The bat is not more than 38 inches in length and 4.25 inches in width and usually weighs between 2.5 pounds and 3 pounds.

Each ball has a circumference of 9 inches and is made of leather. After the ball is hit, the players in the field try to score several runs before the batsman is run out.

The professional sports are run by the International Cricket Council (ICC), headquartered in Dubai. Of its 105 member states, only 12 are considered full members and capable of playing “test” games.

Today, the Chail Cricket Ground is owned by the Chail Military School and is used as a playground by school children during the school year.

History of Chail Cricket Ground

Chail Cricket stadium was built in 1893 by Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of the area known as Patiala at that time. Chail was 1st developed as the summer capital of Patiala.

In retaliation, Maharaj Singh has built Chail to his liking, including a palace, temple, lodge, and this cricket ground. Most of the buildings has finished in a bold architectural style, often associated with Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.

Maharaj was a big sports fan and particularly fond of cricket. As such, the Chail Cricket Ground was a significant addition to the new summer capital. He even established an official cricket team, known as Patiala XI. This team became one of the best in India.

Maharaj Singh became the captain of the Indian national cricket team and played in 27 first-class games between 1915 and 1937. When the Indian Union was established, Maharaj donated this cricket ground and adjoining buildings to the Government of India and The Chail Military School.
